The twisting lanes of the Mont-Saint-Michel countryside lead to
one of the most clever and remarkable garden of the late twentieth
century.
La Ballue Garden, with its structure of “ourdoor rooms”,
linked by vistas and furnished with all sorts of topiary, recalls
the Italien mannerist style and the japanese Yin Yang inspiration
of its creators Paul Maymont & François Hebert Stevens.
Laid out over thirty years ago an astonishing variety of effects
have
been created which are marked intrinsically by a sense of «wonder». «Wonder» is
the key-word of the mannerist celebrations held at La Ballue, celebrations
in which phantasmagorical images changed form and meaning, dramatic
effects distinguished by the three dimensional & organic design,
groups of sculptured allegorical figures in movement..
Variety and liveliness as characteristic of the baroque garden is
achieved here by variation in all the structural elements, in scent
and colour, in appearance and sounds and in the contemporary statues,
mostly grotesques & monsters.
